Is It Really Broadband?

The staff here at the apartments I live in really pulled a fast one on me. Before I moved in, I asked them about their internet and cable services. I was told they were included in the price of rent, but “if you aren’t happy with the services, you can get your own cable / internet provider”. Sounds good to me.

As expected, the internet here is very slow. Just how slow, you ask?

Yeah, absolutely horrible! To make matters worse, that line they fed me about getting my own provider was total BS. The local cable company doesn’t even run lines to this complex. Gee, thanks.

I was so angry with the net last night that I decided to hook my phone up and see what kind of speeds I could pull down with it.

It’s a sad day when my cell phone can provide a connection that is a great deal faster than my “high-speed broadband” connection. I dream of the day I can have a fast internet connection again :(

  1. Tyler Ingram Said,

I work for a company that manufacturers broadband wireless equipment. I could look to see if we have any dealers (WISPs) in your area and could light up your complex with a faster connection!

  2. Shawn Knight Said,

anything would be better than this BS. from what i understand, the apartments contract a company called NTC (www.ntc-com.com) for their cable, internet and phone services. as i mentioned, there is no way to get any other type of cable internet here, and i would imagine it would be the same for DSL and the phone lines.

i thought about a wireless card for my desktop, but then again, i dont get good cell phone reception in here and i know most of those use the same type of signal that my cell phone uses when connected as a modem…

  3. Adam Said,

That’s snail speed. I couldn’t get any work done on that. Fortunately my line is a bit faster (982 / 211).

    Thanks for the Speedtest.net link.

  4. Tyler Ingram Said,

We have various hotels using our gear. They set up the units at the end of the hallways and blast the signals down the corridors.

Slow internet sucks, it seems even dialup would be quicker than what you get ;)

  5. Thomas De Maesschalck Said,

Yeah that’s slow as hell, kinda weird though that your upload is more than twice as fast as your download :/

I just tested my line on that site and I got 16628kb/s download and 490kb/s upload. Broadband Internet connections in my country are quite fast but it’s quite expensive compared to other countries and data limits are quite tight.

yeah i would move out…i need fast internet!

  7. derek Said,

Ugh, that would suck. I’d seriously consider moving out if I was stuck with that and could see that as being a legit reason to break any lease.
