Fried Food Weekend

When one thinks of Southern food, fried dishes often come to mind. Well last weekend, that stereotype was 100% true!

On Saturday, Adam, Kiwi, Sarah and I went out to eat at Seafood Junction Too in Byhalia, MS. Byhalia is about 15 minutes south of Memphis. Kiwi used to work at this place about two years ago and since I love seafood, I was looking forward to it.

It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, however. Granted I do live in the South, there are very few times that I actually find myself saying “wow, this is VERY southern”. Saturday was one of those rare occasions :)

Adam and I decided on the buffet, which was filled with all kinds of seafood and other fried foods, some I had never tried before.

Adam is demonstrating the proper way to eat fried frog legs. I tried frog legs too, but only ate one leg… wasn’t too thrilled with the taste. And no, it really didn’t taste much like chicken lol.

Overall the food was really good, especially the shrimp and fried catfish. Oh, and the chocolate brownie dessert was absolutely delicious! I would definitely go back to Seafood Junction Too just for the shrimp and catfish :)

MMMmmm, BBQ heaven!

On Sunday, I got a chance to try another new fried food: fried broccoli. Kiwi works at a fast food place called Abbays. Their slogan says it all; “How the South does fast food”.

I have heard Kiwi talk about the fried broccoli before but hadn’t had a chance to try it for myself. So, that is exactly what I did…

The broccoli was alright, but a little too spicy for my liking. Ranch dressing helped this, but I am not sure I would order it again.

  1. Kattikawn Said,

All of that looks absolutely divine! Especially the frog legs. I love broccoli, but I’ve never heard of it fried. Okra, sure. Even fried corn on the cob. Looks like I may have to try Abbay’s next time I’m over that way.

  2. Shawn Knight Said,

Yeah its definitely ‘different’. BTW, the broccoli isn’t on the menu but just ask for it and they will make it, takes like three minutes to cook.

I still wanna try the fried stuff from TGI Fridays… i think its mac n cheese and green beans…

  3. Leo Said,

Man, I think if I lived down where you are I’d be long dead from heart complications ;)
    Looks great though!!!

  4. Thomas De Maesschalck Said,

I had never heard of fried broccoli before lol.

Hmmm, I might have to try that sometime :P

  5. Ms.Caesi Said,

Have you ever had a fried pickle? They are basically deep fried bread and butter pickle that you dip in this really spicy ranch dressing. They sound gross but they taste great!

  6. Shawn Knight Said,

Ya, there are fried pickles on my plate in the picture above :)

These were a bit too salty tho… But Applebees used to serve the best ever! Last I saw, they took em off the menu :(

  7. Tyler Ingram Said,

Oh that fried broccoli looks good! Reminds me of tempura!

Has anyone here tried Deep Fried ice cream? I am still meaning to try it.

  8. Shawn Knight Said,

No, havent had a chance to try that… or fried candy bars and twinkies… might have to try those at the fair this year tho :)

  9. Kattikawn Said,

Deep fried twinkies… I can hear my arteries clogging at just the thought of it.

  10. cooliojones Said,

I’m going to let you have the frog legs! I’ll concentrate on some good fried chicken or shrimp. The legs are just a lil too exotic for me! :)

I’ve heard of the deep fried ice cream but haven’t tried that either. grease and ice cream…mmmmm. Yummy.

  11. Ms.Caesi Said,

Deep Fried Ice Cream is the absolute best!
